Manual edition of VMWare configuration file when it corrupts

10 Dec

The guest os in VMWare may sometimes corrupts and you cannot boot from it or when opening the guest os from a “*.vmx” file. This could be however, recovered by manually editting the configuration file:

  • Edit the file to be used, usually a *.vmdk file in the folder where a guest os is located. Copy and edit an existing * working vmx is a usually a good start:

  • Edit the display name, the guest os and the extended ConfigFile name. The display name can be casual, but the guestOS must correspond to predefined strings, for details, view here.

  • Reboot, now enjoy.
