If you wish to try Mac OS X on vmware virtual machines, you are most likely to find that the Vmware tools cannot be installed via the menu VM> Install Vmware Tools…, and an error pops up:
Could not find component on update server. Contact VMware Support or your system administrator.
To solve this, you need darwin.iso, which can be downloaded here.
Then take below actions:
- Right click your virtual machine in vmware
- Click the settings menu item
- Select CD/DVD item in the left UI
- On the right UI, select and mount the darwin.iso.
Now, the vmware tools installation is started in your Mac OSX virtual machine:
Install the VMware Tools now! Done!
Thanks 🙂
Great work, thanks!
Legend thank you!
Yeah, worked !!!
Perfect. I was scratching my head.
Then take below actions:
◦Right click your virtual machine in vmware
◦Click the settings menu item
◦Select CD/DVD item in the left UI
◦On the right UI, select and mount the darwin.iso.
I got lost when trying to select the Darwin.iso from the disk I just burned. can you explain it further?
You don’t need to burn the iso. You need to mount the iso right within vmware.

This operation cannot proceed because your Mac OS guest is using the CD/DVD. is the message i get when attempting to select darwin iso
“You cannot install VMware Tools in this location. The VMware Tools installer does not allow its software to installed here.” is the error message I get when I try to install using this method!
I am still getting the same error. How do I resolve it??

Same here! any fix?
darwin.iso didn’t work for me. It does not appear to be a disk image that the mac recognizes.
